When I went for my Amateur Radio License, it was right around the time of my birthday. For my birthday I asked for a cheap radio from Baofeng and a few accessories that all in costed under $100.  I thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread!

Once I received my Technician and General licenses I learned about the Jumpstart program from QRZ & GigaParts where you could apply for an HT (Handy Talkie) radio and some accessories for $21!

I recently received this radio and it has become part of my Emergency Communications radio strategy. When I purchase the radio, I bought the following

  • QRZ Explorer 1 (Radio) (Included)
  • Programming Cable (Included)
  • Premium QRZ Membership (Included)
  • Battery Eliminator (Additional cost)

My plan for the radio is to leave it in my vehicle as a backup to my Mobile in-car radio.

The radio itself is pretty well built and with my radio checks operates just as good if not better than the Baofeng (GT-5R) that I also own. I also purchased a new antenna to go with the kit and will share more about that later!

Thank you to QRZ and Gigaparts for the nifty radio and keep up the good work!
